Earlier this month, the Russian racecar driver and ITMO University student Klim Gavrilov finished first in the Touring Cup of the FIA Motorsport Games 2019. The competition, which took place on the Vallelunga circuit in Italy, is dubbed the Olympics of motor sports. In addition to winning international competitions, Klim is also studying to be a programmer and plans on launching a capsule collection of T-shirts. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, he speaks of his racing career, design, future plans, and how programming can help with driving.
Klim Gavrilov, a second-year student of the Faculty of Software Engineering and Computer Systems, is a gold medal-winner of the FIA Motorsport Games. The event, best described as the Olympics of motorsport, took place from October 31 to November 3, 2019 at the Vallelunga circuit in Italy. Klim Gavrilov competed – and won – in a racecar adorned with ITMO University’s logo.
On 16-20 October, Kronbars, ITMO University’s student sports club together with the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs and the Association of Student Sports Clubs of Russia (ASSC) organized “St. Petersburg Games 2019”, a national student club tournament. The even brought together 12 teams from all over Russia: from Ulan-Ude to Volgograd.
Vsevolod Shepelev, a first-year Bachelor’s student at ITMO’s Faculty of Secure Information Technologies, recently took first place in the Russian Sports and Athletic Contest. ITMO.NEWS talked to the student about how long he has been into sports, why he chose ITMO, and how he plans to juggle his hobby and student life.
On July 13-20, the German city of Heidelberg hosted the 2019 World Ultimate Frisbee Championship for athletes under 24 years old. The competition brought together some 1,300 participants split into 51 teams from 29 countries. The Russian national team was represented by, among others, three ITMO University students. ITMO.NEWS talked to them about how long they have been into this sport, and how they manage to juggle studies with intense frisbee training.

This Wednesday, students, staff, and friends of ITMO University took part in the 10th Bike Ride with ITMO’s Rector Vladimir Vasilyev. Traditionally held every spring and fall – the start and end of the biking season, – the event sees students, professors, researchers, and associates of the university ride together on a route past the picturesque locations of St. Petersburg’s Primorsky District: from the Victory Park, past the Zenit Arena stadium and Yakhtenny Bridge, and to the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg Park. The 29th Winter Universiade has recently ended in Krasnoyarsk. This event, which takes place once in every two years, is often called the Olympics for young people. ITMO University student Vadim Shvedov participated in its curling competitions held on March 2-10. Upon his return from Krasnoyarsk, he spoke to ITMO.NEWS about the difficulties their team had to face, and how knowledge in the field of advanced mathematics helps play curling.
