  • Researchers Explain: All About Carbon Dots And Their Medical Applications

    Carbon nanoparticles (or carbon dots) are a recent and lucky discovery that has managed to become one of the most popular scientific trends of the last 15 years. Their biocompatibility and solubility, among other properties, make them highly useful in diagnostics and therapy of some of the most severe conditions, as well as in biosensing, bioimaging, environmental monitoring, optoelectronics, and other fields. We caught up with Elena Ushakova, the head of the Laboratory of Light-Emitting Carbon Quantum Nanostructures and PI of the Functionalized Carbon Nanoparticles group, to ask her all about carbon dots, their synthesis, and the promise they hold.

  • ITMO Team Wins Gold at ICPC Northern Eurasia Finals

    Today, December 7, marked the finals of the Northern Eurasia leg of ICPC – the international collegiate programming contest. Team pengzoo from ITMO University took fourth place in the competition, scoring a gold medal alongside other winners. Now, they will represent their region in the 2022/2023 finals.

  • ITMO’s Advanced Engineering School Awards 1.5 Million Ruble Grants to Interdisciplinary Teams’ Tech Projects

    Advanced engineering schools have been launched across the country in 2022 as part of a federal project. Its main goal is to train principal engineers who can assemble interdisciplinary teams and use data-driven approaches to integrate new products into partner companies’ processes. ITMO’s Advanced Engineering School is part of the effort. Recently, it has awarded grants of up to 1.5 million rubles to ten interdisciplinary teams made up of ITMO Master’s and PhD students. We spoke to some of the winners about their projects and future plans.

    At the ninth forum on topical issues in student sports, held on December 1-2, Sergey Seyranov, the President of the Russian Student Sports Union, and Alexey Barymov, the president of the Functional Athletics Federation, signed an agreement establishing a Student Functional Athletics League and thus introducing this sport into the curriculum of Russian universities.
