  • Farewell to Cavities: ITMO Scientists Develop Toothpaste to Beat Plaque More Efficiently

    Researchers from ITMO’s ChemBio Cluster have developed a mechano-bactericidal toothpaste based on calcium carbonate. Tests have demonstrated that it is two times more efficient than conventional antiseptic toothpastes in removing the bacterial dental plaque that is often at the root of many oral diseases, including cavities.

  • Researchers Propose New Multipolar Lattices for Improved Metasurfaces

    Scientists from ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics have predicted a unique type of bound states in the continuum – one that is completely resistant to changes in the system parameters. This would allow researchers to control the resonance properties of metasurfaces and, eventually, to develop more efficient optical and optoelectronic devices of the next generation. The corresponding paper received special recognition from the editors of Physical Review B (Letter) and was published in the section Editor’s Suggestion.

  • ITMO Scientists Develop Novel Hybrid Material to Prevent Post-Surgical Infection

    Even though medicine has made huge strides in recent years, around 10-20% of all patients still fall victim to infection-related postoperative complications caused by sterilization issues or overly resistant bacteria in hospitals. Since infection sites are typically hard to detect, researchers from ITMO’s SCAMT Institute have created a new suture material that will make it possible to track the spread of infection in real time.

  • ITMO Scientists Find a Way to Reconfigure Topological States of Light

    A research team from ITMO University, Australian National University, and Jilin University has provided experimental proof of the conjecture that topological states of light can be produced not only by influencing the crystal lattice geometry but also by changing the shape of the meta-atoms and their mutual orientation. Moreover, the new approach helps change the position and the degree of light localization in real time.

    Scientists from ITMO University and the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University have developed a more affordable and efficient method that makes printing copper micropatterns on a glass surface 100 times faster. The resulting micropatterns can be used  in various devices, such as chemical sensors, flexible electronics, and anti-theft systems.
