  • 11th Congress of Young Scientists at ITMO Brings Together 2,000+ Russian Researchers from 66 Cities

    On April 4-8, ITMO University hosted the 11th Congress of Young Scientists. While the event had been held online in the past two years, it was now once again available offline, too, with 64 sessions held in the blended format. All in all, more than two thousand representatives of 160 scientific organizations and universities from 66 Russian cities took part in the event.

  • ITMO Researchers Developing Alternative to PCR Testing

    A joint research team from ITMO University and the University of Central Florida are working on a new type of nanosensors – the so-called DNA nanomachines (nanorobots) – that can unfold RNA and DNA structures to identify pathogen-specific sequences. Unlike PCR tests, the new testing method does not require expensive equipment and special conditions and can thus be performed outside laboratories.     A round of project defenses was recently held at ITMO University for the participants of a competition for practice-oriented research and R&D projects.   • Finding Nanoparticles: ITMO Scientists Propose New Method for Discovering Nanomaterials With Desired Properties

    Researchers from ITMO’s ChemBio Cluster have devised an algorithm that can automatically detect the properties of nanoparticles, including their size, shape, and surface structure, based on their images and even sketches and find similar particles in its database. The novel system also works the other way around by informing users how to produce substances with the desired properties.   • Geneticist Bayazit Yunusbayev On How Genetics Can Help Fight Autoimmune Diseases

    For several years Bayazit Yunusbayev had been studying the mechanisms behind the autoimmune and allergic diseases at the University of Tartu (Estonia), and last year he joined ITMO’s SCAMT Institute, where he heads the Evolutionary Biomedicine group, to continue with his research. Bayazit Yunusbayev came to the university as part of the ITMO Fellowship & Professorship program that allows researchers to work at the university for several years.   • ITMO Scientists Develop Method to Easily Synthesize Materials With Set Properties

    Researchers from ITMO’s SCAMT Institute have demonstrated the possibility of using the sol-gel method to produce various porous monolithic structures from magnetite nanoparticles. The new method can produce multifunctional materials with complex hierarchical structures, such as the xero-, cryo-, and aerogel of magnetite. Thanks to this approach, it is possible to control the composition of the resulting porous materials through the relation of their compounds’ concentrations. One of the method’s most promising applications is biomedicine – the new aerogel can be used to stop bleeding and xerogel can serve as a repository for drug transportation.

  • Researchers Design New Synthesis Method for Carbon Nanodots With Potential Applications in Biomedicine

    Scientists from ITMO University, St. Petersburg State University, TU Dresden, Ioffe Institute, and City University of Hong Kong have devised water-soluble carbon nanodots that demonstrate efficient luminescence in the long wavelength spectral region. The researchers also managed to achieve the highest possible photoluminescence quantum yield reported so far for carbon nanodots emitting in the near-infrared spectral region. The developed nanoparticles can be used as non-toxic fluorescent probes for bioimaging. Read on to learn more about the study and its findings.

  • Russian Researchers Suggest Innovative Approach to Production of Microfluidic Modules

    Scientists from ITMO University and the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute have developed a unique production method for microfluidic modules based on composites of metals and polymers. Upon contact with a module, droplets of liquid flow towards the areas with the smallest wetting angle. Such modules can significantly facilitate the production of biochips, sensors, and medical express tests.
