This Weekend in St. Petersburg: June 2-3

This Saturday, June 2, the Monrepos Park (Vyborg) will host the Lilac Day. As you might know, “Mon repos” means “my rest”, and this place is perfect for those who want take time away from the city noise and enjoy a magnificent view. With hundreds of lilac trees all blooming at once, the park will turn into a kingdom of flowers. Take a stroll through the park, attend an exhibition of lilac bouquets, take part in workshops on gouache painting and perfume making, listen to live jazz and blues, and even try some lilac cotton candy, ice-cream and popcorn. If Vyborg is a bit too far a trip for you, there is a great event right in the centre of the city, on the beach near the Peter and Paul Fortress. The annual Sand Sculpture Festival is open for the public from May 25 till September 9. Masterpieces of Russian and world architecture and sculpture, such as the Moscow Kremlin, the Mayan Pyramids, the Great Sphinx and many more, all made by hand out of sand! Admission fee is from 250 to 350 rub.

Another interesting exhibition is the Street Art Wonderland Project hosted by the St. Petersburg Street Art Museum. 40 artists from all over the world will present their works to the public. This year’s theme is the line between myth and reality, so there will be no shortage of various mythical creatures and cartoon characters. Entrance fee is 400 rub.

Finally, there will be several fairs that you might like. The St. Petersburg Fair will offer a wide variety of designer clothes, accessories and souvenirs, while the Handmade Fair at the St. Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex (Metro Park Pobedy, 8 Yu. Gagarina Prospect) offers various summer clothes, handmade crafts, souvenirs and many other pretty things made by local craftsmen.
