An international research team has shown that the conversion process of natural gas into methanol depends not only on the permanent characteristics of the catalysts used but also on the properties that these catalysts exhibit in the course of the reaction. This discovery can revolutionize the oil and wood industries by introducing modern technologies, which will allow manufacturers to process waste into valuable chemical products. The article was published in ACS Catalysis.
August 26 marked the start of the 20th International Sol-Gel Conference. Taking place at ITMO University, it is dedicated to research in the field of solution chemistry. This is the first time that the prestigious event is being held in Russia. More than 500 participants from China, France, Germany and other countries gathered in St. Petersburg to discuss the future of the field, share about their experience, explore promising developments, and talk about their own research topics in the format of stand-up presentations as part of the Science Slam project. The main topic of the anniversary conference was supporting young researchers.
ITMO and Moscow State University Scientists Announce an Open Call for a Joint Article Series for Frontiers in Chemistry
Several weeks ago, ITMO University hosted the international conference Mendeleev 150, which brought together chemistry researchers from all over the world. The event may be over, but the conference’s organizers are still continuing their work in the framework of the International Year of the Periodic Table, proclaimed open by the UN. To that end, ITMO’s Mikhail Kurushkin, chair of Mendeleev 150, and Lomonosov Moscow State University professor Evgeny Gudilin have announced a series of joint articles on the periodic table’s role in a number of scientific fields. The selected works will be published in a prestigious scientific journal Frontiers in Chemistry.
The international conference Mendeleev 150 took place at ITMO University on June 26-28. The event’s participants celebrated not only the 150th anniversary of the creation of Mendeleev’s periodic table of elements but also the birthday of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), which supported the conference. Read on to find out more about the event, Mendeleev-brand vodka, and the history of the periodic law.
The international conference Mendeleev 150 at ITMO University has come to its conclusion. The event was held on the occasion of the UN’s International Year of the Periodic Table and brought together the top chemists, physicists, educators, and other experts from Russia, the USA, the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, China, and other countries. Over the course of three days, the event’s speakers discussed the top scientific trends and the effects of periodic table-related discoveries on today’s research. The closing presentations were delivered by the Russian crystallographer and chemist Artem Oganov, child prodigy Platon Kachalin, and the evolutionary biologist David Seaborg, the son of famed Nobel Laureate Glenn Seaborg.
ITMO University has recently hosted the Mendeleev 150 International Conference. Held as part of the International Year of the Periodic Table, the conference brought together leading specialists in the field of chemistry, physics, and history of chemistry from Russia, the USA, the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, China, and other countries. In the course of three days, they discussed key trends in modern science and discoveries related to the periodic table.
2019 was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly as the International Year of Mendeleev’s Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. The discovery of the periodic table in 1869 was a major breakthrough in the field of chemistry. Its publication laid the foundation for rapid development of this complex yet extremely interesting science, while the history of its invention is full of myths and legends. According to one of them, the scientist saw the table in a dream. In his open lecture at the Mendeleev Center, Eugeniy Kalinin, a lecturer at St. Petersburg State University, shared about the path the humanity made to discover the periodic table of chemical elements. ITMO.NEWS publishes the highlights of the lecture.
Interdisciplinary Innovations at ITMO University: In Conversation With ChemBio Professor Ekaterina Skorb
Last September, ITMO University chemistry professor Ekaterina Skorb won the L’Oreal – UNESCO “For Women in Science” contest. For the past year, she has conducted research as part of ITMO University’s ChemBio Cluster in the past year. ITMO.NEWS met with Prof. Skorb to talk about the results of 2018, Russia’s scientific prospects and her love of opera.
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of discovery of the Periodic System by the Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev, the UN proclaimed 2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. Dmitri Mendeleev remains one of the most notable Russian scientists of all times. But what do we know about him? Igor Dmitriev, a professor at St. Petersburg State University and the director of the Mendeleev Museum, gave a lecture at the Nekrasov library, where he dispelled all the myths about Mendeleev and shed some light on the life of the famous chemist.
