  • Over 2000 Participate in ITMO’s Online Congress of Young Scientists

    ITMO University hosted the recent Congress of Young Scientists from April 15 to 18. This was the first time that the event was held online. Everyone was quick to adapt to the new online format, and the schedule remained intact.   • ITMO University’s Congress of Young Scientists Held Online for the First Time

    The novel coronavirus pandemic has forced theaters, museums and concert halls to move into the digital space – and scientific events are not an exception. This year, the Congress of Young Scientists was set, for the 17th time, to bring together talented researchers at ITMO University. But 2020 turned out to be historic, and this Congress – unique. As part of the reviewed arrangement, young scientists will be presenting their research and communicating with experts on Zoom.

  • Tbilisi to Host the International Conference on Metamaterials and Nanophotonics METANANO 2020

    On September 14-18, 2020, the capital of Georgia is planning to host the METANANO international conference. Held in Russia over the recent years, the event is venturing abroad to the sunlit city of Tbilisi. Despite the pandemic, the preparations for the conference are still ongoing. The organizers are thinking about how to introduce online formats into the program. Talented students, PhD researchers and young scientists wishing to attend METANANO can partake in a grants competition. Abstracts have to be sent in by March 31.   • Edible Food Wrap, Supplements for Bees and a Natural Antiseptic: Exploring New Applications for One of the Most Common Biopolymers

    At the end of February, the scientific conference “Prospects of Using Polyfunctional Components of Chitin and Chitosan in Food Systems” was held at ITMO University as part of strategic cooperation between ITMO and the Federal Research Center “Fundamentals of Biotechnology” of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Scientists from all over the country gathered in St. Petersburg to discuss the latest developments in chitin and chitosan research.   • Researchers Suggest Using Blockchain to Boost Self-Driving Cars’ Security

    Scientists from ITMO’s Faculty of Secure Information Technologies have suggested applying blockchain technology to monitoring road traffic. Their algorithm will make it possible for driverless cars to create unalterable activity logs to document any road accident they detect. The accidents will be kept in databases to identify potential “black spots”. The project was showcased at the International Conference on Information Networking 2020 (ICOIN 2020) in Barcelona and is published in the SCOPUS-indexed proceedings of the Conference.

  • Global Warming and Cold: How Refrigeration Industry Reacts to Contemporary Challenges

    Global warming is one of the most discussed topics of our time. According to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) estimates, if we don’t take any action now the average temperature around the globe will rise by 3,7–4,8°С. Production of harmful substances used in the refrigeration industry contributes to the existing environmental problems. ITMO University has recently hosted Global Warming: The Main Challenge for Refrigeration Industry, a conference where experts in the field got to discuss the prospects of the industry, the ways to solve the issue of ozone layer depletion and transition to more eco-friendly technologies.   • Making the Workspace Safer With VR

    Last week at the Tochka Kipenia event space was marked by the Majorov International Conference on Software Engineering and Computer Systems, a part of ITMO University’s 120th anniversary celebrations. The topics of the conference included software engineering development, computer systems and cyber-physical systems. One of the key presentations on the first day of the conference was given by Dmitry Kirillov, the president of VR solution company Modum Lab.   • Resident of ITMO Technopark Included in Top-3 of SLUSH Festival

    The SLUSH festival, one of the biggest startup events in Europe, has recently ended in Helsinki, Finland. Several of ITMO University’s Technopark residents took part in the event. For them, it was an opportunity to present their projects, attract potential investors and familiarize themselves with their counterparts’ work. A total of three companies collaborating with ITMO University received awards from the jury.
