  • PhD Student Mikhail Maslyaev: Science Gives More Opportunities for Growth

    January 21 is celebrated as PhD Student Day in Russia. Over the years, ITMO has welcomed hundreds of PhD students who graduate to pursue an academic career or use their degree for a transition between different research fields. This was the case for Mikhail Maslyaev, who graduated from the Faculty of Geography of the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), where he studied meteorology and climate modeling, and then got into machine learning. Now, as a PhD student at ITMO he works at the recently launched Laboratory for Composite AI and specializes in modeling physical systems.   • ITMO PhD Student ‪Pavel Tonkaev‬ on His Path to Science and Applied Nanophotonics

    Pavel Tonkaev started his Master’s at ITMO University in 2017 after graduating from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU). Since his second year here, Pavel has been studying perovskite materials in nanophotonics and optoelectronics. Current studies suggest that these materials may not only become the future of solar energy but also set the stage for various other technologies, from the creation of sensitive photodetectors to the study of living cells.   • ITMO PhD Student Anna Mikhailovskaya Receives IEEE MTT-S Graduate Fellowship

    Anna Mikhailovskaya, a PhD student at ITMO’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering, received a graduate fellowship of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society in the category Medical Application. It’s the first time the award was given to a Russian scientist.

  • Scientists Suggest Using Gold Nanoparticle Metasurfaces to Determine Substance Molecular Composition

    This will make it possible to create compact devices that will accurately determine molecular composition of a liquid or gas, and help identify potentially dangerous chemical compounds. The results of the work carried out by researchers from ITMO University and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel have been published in Nanomaterials.

  • R&D Projects Competition Winners On Their Creations and University Support

    In late March, the results of ITMO’s practice-oriented R&D projects competition were announced. A total of 25 participants presented their ideas with only 10 getting grants from the University. These grants don’t only include financial support, but also help with project paperwork, and team work management. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with the heads of the winning teams to ask them why their projects are special and how they are planning to use the grants.
