This Friday, September 1, Russia celebrates Knowledge Day – the holiday that marks the end of summer and the start of a new academic year. And what’s the best way to welcome the new year at school if not by soaking up some culture and art in the halls of the State Hermitage Museum, especially since entrance is free for students on this exact day? Views of St. Petersburg Suburbs is a collection of engravings and lithographs showcasing the urban sprawl of St. Pete in retrospective, with its historical and cultural events, as well as lush green cityscapes and characteristic buildings.

A new exhibition celebrating the works of Sergey Sveshnikov, a vivid representative of Leningrad underground culture and a key figure in St. Pete photography, is opening at ROSPHOTO this September. The display of 200-something vintage images includes monochrome photographs hand-colored by the master, photo chronicles of famed creative groups and musicians, and bromoil portraits – with some items being displayed for the first time.

Next Wednesday, the sensational production of the classic opera Rigoletto by Philipp Stölzl that thrilled the audience with not only vocal and acting performances and authentic costume designs but also a jaw-dropping setting (a floating stage and a gigantic clown puppet) will be screened in Rodina Cinema. The screening will be in Italian with Russian subtitles.
