Mini-computers and Transport Tech: Going Local
What products can be considered domestic? How to provide data security for devices that use the components made abroad? Experts in a variety of fields along with representatives of government and business were trying to answer these questions at the Center of Import Substitution and Localization that opened at Lenexpo Exhibition Grounds.
The Center was organized in September 2015 as a match making area for interaction and experience exchange between Russian entrepreneurs and experts in various fields who aimed to promote promising goods, services and technologies. Each month different Governmental Committees head the center. They define certain fields depending on their specializations so as to give participants an opportunity to discuss different issues. Thus the Committee on IT and Communications of St. Petersburg headed the Center in December.
“One of the most important challenges is to understand what kinds of goods can be substituted…Currently equipment manufacturing field cannot be covered by the import substitution program completely because producing of hardware components in Russia meets some economic difficulties,” noted Vladimir Grigoriev, head of Chair of Wireless Telecommunications.
Furthermore it is very difficult to provide data safety using imported information and communication technologies. That is why large St. Petersburg communication companies follow a new trend in import substitution by developing their own routers, software, computer-aided design systems and data bases.
“Apart from large companies two Russian Universities such as Bonch-Bruevich Saint Petersburg State University of Telecommunications and ITMO University presented their own inventions,” said Vladimir Aksenov, head of Chair of Wireless Telecommunications` lab.
Thus ITMO University experts demonstrated ultra short wave system “Sitran-2,” which aimed to develop networks of intelligent transport system of St. Petersburg, secure smartphones, cell phones, software package “Tenzor” for ultra short wave system management, CALM enabled short range system for intelligent transport connection`s networks, ultra short wave systems with a function of mesh network construction. All these technologies were developed by researchers of Chair of Wireless Telecommunications with the assistance of their partnering companies.
Such inventions as cell phones and mini PCs “Raydget” stirred visitors` interest most of all.
“These computers have no analogues. Even Intel`s experts appreciated them. “Raydget” has several models. Some of them have access to the Internet and WiFi. There are also more complicated ones that are equipped with i5 and i7 microprocessors and have up to eight cores and large access memory. Their productivity is very high so they can be used as servers of small and medium-sized companies, and also as onboard computers…” said Vladimir Aksenov.
Russians launched a mass production of “Raydget.” Several labs of ITMO University have been already equipped with these computers. All elements except hardware components were developed and produced in Russia.
