We caught up with Cristina Fierro Nunez from Ecuador, who has been an Applied Computer Science student at ITMO University for the past three years. In this interview, she shares her reasons for coming to Russia, talks about life as an international student in St. Petersburg, and her advice for those planning to study in Russia.
This academic year, ITMO University is celebrating its 120th anniversary. That means we’re old enough to have deep-rooted traditions and young enough to be at the cutting edge of innovation. We’re committed to being nimble and moving education and science forward. It’s only fitting that during this special year, we’re shaking things up once again. Here’s what to expect in the coming year:
What’s it like to take part in organizing a major international conference as a first-year student? How do you communicate with scientists from the world over and solve an avalanche of issues in mere hours? This July, ITMO University was home to the 4th International Conference on the Periodic Table, which brought together renowned chemists, physicists, educators, and historians of chemistry from Russia, the US, the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, China, and other countries. The event’s organizing committee was comprised, in part, of students of ITMO’s School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems, who spoke to ITMO.NEWS about their experience and their future plans.
Last year, ITMO University launched ITMO.STARS, a program for talented prospective students with insufficient Unified State Exam scores. Instead, the applicants could prove their mettle by showcasing their self-made software, methodology, or a scientific, social, or business project. In 2018, the University enrolled 14 winners of ITMO.STARS. We spoke to some of them to learn about their first year at ITMO.
ITMO Master’s Student Yan Koval on His Internship in Denmark and Importance of Public Opinion in Lighting Design
Yan Koval, a second-year Master’s student of ITMO University’s program in Lighting Design has returned from a short-term internship at Aalborg University (Denmark). We spoke to Yan and learned about the differences in Copenhagen and St. Petersburg’s lighting cultures, the importance of public opinion in designing a lighting environment, and how Denmark is making its lighting eco-friendly.
The past Sunday, April 7, ITMO University hosted the finale of the ITMO-VK competition held by the popular social network VK. More than 5,000 school students from 60 regions of Russia and the neighboring countries took part in the competition from the comfort of their home. On April 5-7, the 351 participants who passed into the final round came to St. Petersburg to compete for the main prize: 10 bonus Unified State Exam points to be used during admission to ITMO University, as well as MacBooks supplied by St. Petersburg City Administration, tickets to this summer’s VK Fest, and other gifts from ITMO University.
Project activities allow students to more creatively approach problem-solving and trains them for work in business environments and promotion of their own, and practically useful, products. To enhance the applications of project-oriented approach in education, ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering launched a contest for filling of the positions of developers and mentors of educational projects in the subject area of physics. The winners will receive financial support and the opportunity to bring their ideas into reality both at ITMO and the Sirius educational center in Sochi.
The results of the 2019 national student competition “I am a Professional” have just been announced. From a total of 500,000 students from all over Russia participating in this year’s competition, 3,472 became prize winners. This roll call of participants with the best results includes 80 ITMO University students, five of whom were even awarded gold medals. Diplomates of “I am a Professional” get admission perks when applying to Master’s and PhD programs at Russia’s leading universities, as well as an opportunity to partake in an internship at major companies.
February 20 marked the final, on-site round of “I am a Professional”, a national competition for university students. ITMO University was one of the venues to host the three-hour contest. Participants of the “It’s Your Call!” winter school, which was held as part of the competition, and the final round of the competition itself, talked with ITMO.NEWS about their competition experience.
