  • ITMO Scientists Develop Ultracompact Optical Switch

    The new device includes a structure of single-atom semiconductors and an ultracompact nanoresonator. The switching is conducted with light, via changes in the exciton states in each of the two semiconductor layers. Thanks to its ultracompact size (10 nanometers long and 1.5 nanometers thick), the device can be placed on a chip for use as a logic element in computers for optical information processing. The results of this study, conducted in collaboration with Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH, South Korea), are described in an article published in ACS Nano.

  • Researchers Develop Material Capable of Being Transparent or Reflective in IR Spectrum

    Modern optical devices require constant tuning of their light interaction settings. Lenses need to change focus, lidars have to emit and receive light at different angles. For that purpose, there exist various mechanical apparatuses that shift lenses, rotate reflectors, and move emitters. But what if they all were to become unnecessary? An international research team that includes staff members of ITMO University and the University of Exeter have proposed a new metamaterial capable of changing its optical properties without any mechanical input. This development could result in a significant improvement in the reliability of complex optical devices while making them cheaper to manufacture. The study was featured on the cover of the May 2020 issue of Optica.

  • ITMO University Invites Young Scientists to Study Graphene-Type 2D Materials

    ITMO University’s Laboratory of Light-Matter Coupling in Nanostructures has begun active research into the optical and electrical properties of two-dimensional materials. Two-dimensional materials are atom-thin structures, graphene being the most well-known example. The laboratory was recently joined by Ekaterina Khestanova, an experimental physicist with a PhD from the University of Manchester, where she studied two-dimensional materials. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, she talks about her past research and her plans at the laboratory.

  • Researchers Use Glass Microparticles to Enhance Solar Cell Efficiency

    Scientists from ITMO University have developed a new solar cell coating based on amorphous silicon that combines the features of an electrode and those of a light-trapping structure. The coating enabled researchers to cut down on reflected light and avoid the overheating of solar cells, thus increasing their overall efficiency by 20%. Moreover, the suggested method is highly suitable for industrial needs due to its relatively low cost and simplicity. The research was published in Optics Letters.

  • Royal Society Member Maurice Skolnick: Why Making Science Understandable to Society Matters

    Why do we need to “disassemble” light into photons and how can it change the world? How do you explain to someone what a soliton is? Which discovery has shown the importance of long-term research to the world? Maurice Skolnick, a member of the Royal Society and a visiting scientist at ITMO University answers these and other questions in an interview with ITMO.NEWS. Prof. Skolnick’s field of work is semiconductors and he is currently studying methods of dispersing light into photons to create new modes of communication. He came to ITMO to work at a new international laboratory on hybrid light-matter states.
