  • ScienceMedia Hackathon for Aspiring Journalists at ITMO University

    This year marks the fifth time that St. Petersburg hosts ScienceMedia, a competition that brings together talented and motivated students interested in science journalism. This was the second time that the event was held in the format of a hackathon. A total of 75 students from 25 Russian regions took part in the competition. In the course of two days, they listened to lectures, solved practical tasks, and were given 24 hours to come up with a full-fledged longread covering the tours they’d been to.   • ITMO University at World Conference of Science Journalists

    At the beginning of July, the Swiss city of Lausanne hosted the 11th World Conference of Science Journalists, which brought together over 1,000 specialists from Europe, the US, Canada, Latin America, Asia and Australia. Russia was represented by 18 people, including members of the Association of Communicators in Education and Science (AKSON), ITMO University graduates and Master’s students in science communication, and staff of ITMO Science Communication Center. In the course of four days, they discussed the most topical questions of science journalism and communication and visited CERN and Campus Biotech, where they familiarized themselves with the principles of working in major science organizations.

  • International Journalists on Russian Science and Future of the Science Communication Community

    In late June, a group of international science journalists visited ITMO to learn about the university, its scientists and inventions, as well as other organizations that have become highlights of St. Petersburg's technological and innovation industry: the companies Gazpromneft and JetBrains. What’s more, the journalists participated in the Third Forum of Science Communicators. ITMO.NEWS spoke with them about their perception of Russian science, their experience of interacting with Russian scientists, the prospects of development for the scicomm community, and why science communication and journalism are essential for the society as a whole.

  • Third Forum of Science Communicators: Responsibility and Challenges in Science Journalism

    On June 28, the Third Forum of Science Communicators was held at ITMO University. Organized with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the event became a platform for discussion and exchange of experience among science journalists, science popularizers, scientific press officers and researchers of science and technologies. Among the speakers were leading national and international experts in the field of science communication, including the prominent journalist and scientist Michele Catanzaro, who spoke about the challenges of science journalism, the latter’s responsibility to society and paths for development.
