  • ITMO Researchers Produce Magnetic Spider Silk-Based Structures for Implantology and Targeted Drug Delivery

Scientists from ITMO University have created a magnetic material capable of promoting tissue regeneration by utilizing silk of the Linothele fallax spiders, which holds promise for implantology and tissue regeneration. In the material, the silk makes up a scaffold for cell growth, while the medications, which reach the target under the influence of the magnetic field, accelerate recovery. The drug was successfully tested in vitro – and described in International Journal of Biological Macromolecules.

  • Technopark Resident Develops Technology for Accelerated Regeneration, Extended Wakefulness and Delayed Aging

The company “ATG Service Gene”, a resident of ITMO University’s Technopark, has developed a technology that, in future, could be used to create drugs that could boost regeneration, prolong wakefulness, slow aging, relieve pain and treat cancerous tumors. This technology also has the potential to treat other illnesses, including infectious ones. It is based on gene-encoding proteins responsible for the organism’s therapeutic processes. It has the potential to stimulate the organism to produce an increased amount of material needed to cure an illness. Such gene encoding can even alter the structure of diseased cells thus causing them to self-destruct. The company is currently working on gene therapy drugs for this purpose.
