ITMO and Moscow State University Scientists Announce an Open Call for a Joint Article Series for Frontiers in Chemistry
Several weeks ago, ITMO University hosted the international conference Mendeleev 150, which brought together chemistry researchers from all over the world. The event may be over, but the conference’s organizers are still continuing their work in the framework of the International Year of the Periodic Table, proclaimed open by the UN. To that end, ITMO’s Mikhail Kurushkin, chair of Mendeleev 150, and Lomonosov Moscow State University professor Evgeny Gudilin have announced a series of joint articles on the periodic table’s role in a number of scientific fields. The selected works will be published in a prestigious scientific journal Frontiers in Chemistry.
The international conference Mendeleev 150 took place at ITMO University on June 26-28. The event’s participants celebrated not only the 150th anniversary of the creation of Mendeleev’s periodic table of elements but also the birthday of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), which supported the conference. Read on to find out more about the event, Mendeleev-brand vodka, and the history of the periodic law.
The international conference Mendeleev 150 at ITMO University has come to its conclusion. The event was held on the occasion of the UN’s International Year of the Periodic Table and brought together the top chemists, physicists, educators, and other experts from Russia, the USA, the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, China, and other countries. Over the course of three days, the event’s speakers discussed the top scientific trends and the effects of periodic table-related discoveries on today’s research. The closing presentations were delivered by the Russian crystallographer and chemist Artem Oganov, child prodigy Platon Kachalin, and the evolutionary biologist David Seaborg, the son of famed Nobel Laureate Glenn Seaborg.
ITMO University has recently hosted the Mendeleev 150 International Conference. Held as part of the International Year of the Periodic Table, the conference brought together leading specialists in the field of chemistry, physics, and history of chemistry from Russia, the USA, the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, China, and other countries. In the course of three days, they discussed key trends in modern science and discoveries related to the periodic table.
2019 was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly as the International Year of Mendeleev’s Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. The discovery of the periodic table in 1869 was a major breakthrough in the field of chemistry. Its publication laid the foundation for rapid development of this complex yet extremely interesting science, while the history of its invention is full of myths and legends. According to one of them, the scientist saw the table in a dream. In his open lecture at the Mendeleev Center, Eugeniy Kalinin, a lecturer at St. Petersburg State University, shared about the path the humanity made to discover the periodic table of chemical elements. ITMO.NEWS publishes the highlights of the lecture.
Evolutionary Biologist David Seaborg: Science Enriches Our Lives with Fantastic Ideas and Discoveries
When talking about science, David Seaborg says that the music, art, and theater are important in exciting people and catching their interest about science and scientific issues, such climate change and the extinction crisis. A renowned evolutionary biologist and the son of Nobel Laureate Glenn T. Seaborg, David has founded and currently leads the World Rainforest Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the rainforest and preserving biodiversity worldwide. This year, David Seaborg will speak at the 4th International Conference on the Periodic Table that will take place at ITMO University. We talked to the scientist about the usefulness Periodic Table, the promising potential of alternative energy sources, and why establishing a dialog between politicians and society is so important.
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of discovery of the Periodic System by the Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev, the UN proclaimed 2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. Dmitri Mendeleev remains one of the most notable Russian scientists of all times. But what do we know about him? Igor Dmitriev, a professor at St. Petersburg State University and the director of the Mendeleev Museum, gave a lecture at the Nekrasov library, where he dispelled all the myths about Mendeleev and shed some light on the life of the famous chemist.
Mendeleev 150, MedChem 2019, and Marnikov Congress: the International Year of the Period Table in Russia
In Moscow, an official ceremony has celebrated the opening of the International Year of the Periodic Table. President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, renowned scientists, officials, and representatives of scientific and public organizations from around the world have attended the event. Throughout the year, many events in Russia and abroad will be dedicated to the topic of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. Below is a list of all the important chemistry-related events that will be held in Russia this year.
1869 is considered to be the year of discovery of the Periodic System by the Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of this important milestone, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT 2019). The opening ceremony was hosted in UNESCO headquarters in Paris on January 29. It kick-started the year abounding with large-scale scientific events such as the key 4th International Conference on the Periodic Table, which is to be held at ITMO University in July 2019.
