  • ITMO Dean Sergey Makarov on Profession, Publicity, and Scientific Openness

Sergey Makarov is one of the youngest DSc holders at ITMO University. Together with Anvar Zakhidov, a professor at the University of Texas in Dallas, he led the formation of ITMO’s Laboratory of Hybrid Nanophotonics and Optoelectronics. Sergey has been nominated for various awards, including the President of Russia Award for Young Scientists in the Field of Science and Innovation and Research Excellence Award Russia as the youngest and most productive author in materials sciences. Not only does he run the laboratory, conduct research, and publish articles but also organizes conferences and international schools, and works as an editor in two scientific journals. ITMO.NEWS talked to Sergey to learn more about how to succeed in science, why it is important to reach out to the widest audience, what football players and scientists have in common, and whether it is possible to research on your own.

  • Science for Industry of the Future: Photonics Master’s Studies at ITMO University

By 2025, 75% of people are forecasted to have constant internet access – and the already prevalent digitalization of our life will become even more widespread. In such conditions, optical and quantum communications solve a variety of tasks. Photonics is a science and technology field at the intersection of optical physics, engineering and materials science. Here, light – a beam of photons – is used to process and transmit information. Photons don’t have mass or electric charge. Such technologies work at an ultra-high speed – much faster than electronic systems. ITMO University’s Master’s students majoring in Photonics take part in research and development of hi-tech devices for the industry of the future. More on the opportunities presented by Master’s studies at ITMO University’s School of Photonics – in this article.

  • Physicists Trap Light in Nanoresonators for Record Time

An international team of researchers from ITMO University, the Australian National University, and Korea University have experimentally trapped an electromagnetic wave in a gallium arsenide nanoresonator a few hundred nanometers in size for a record-breaking time. Earlier attempts to trap light for such a long time have only been successful with much larger resonators. In addition, the researchers have provided experimental proof that this resonator may be used as a basis for an efficient light frequency nanoconverter. The results of this research have raised great interest among the scientific community and were published in Science, one of the world’s leading academic journals. Scientists have suggested drastically new opportunities for subwavelength optics and nanophotonics – including the development of compact sensors, night vision devices, and optical data transmission technologies.

  • ITMO Scientists Review 2D Heterostructure Architectures

Specialists who work in the fields of optoelectronics and biomedicine are always on the lookout for new materials with unique optical properties, or methods for reducing the existing devices' size. New semiconductor lasers will allow scientists to work on a nanoscale and perform tasks impossible with traditional equipment. The creation of these devices was made possible thanks to new nano-heterostructures based on combinations of semiconductor and metal components. This September, a group of ITMO scientists published a review of different types of such structures, as well as their possible applications in modern lasers, optoelectronic devices, and biomedical materials, in the Small journal.
