  • Scientists Taught Fluorescent Microscope to Automatically Adapt to Any Sample

An international team of physicists found a new way to improve images obtained by fluorescence microscopy. The method is based on adaptive optics and implies an automatic correction of aberrations. Moreover, this correction is based on the quality of individual pixels, rather than the image as a whole. This helps avoid re-calibration of the microscope in case of changing the sample. As a result, microscopy can be significantly accelerated. The results are published in PLoS ONE.

  • High School Laboratories for Nanotechnologies

In early 2018, ITMO’s resident NT-SPb finished equipping five regional quantoriums with their products. These new “High School Laboratories for Nanotechnology” will become a space for high school students to study a new field of science, as well as conduct interdisciplinary projects that stem from real nanoindustry tasks. Aleksander Golubok, Professor at the Department of Nano-Photonics and Metamaterials, and Ivan Mukhin, Research Fellow at the Metamaterials Laboratory, talk about high-tech equipment that is safe for children, the new School Laboratories for Nanotechnologies and the prospects of this new undertaking.

  • ITMO Scientists Develop New “White” Near-Field Optical Microscope

Scientists from ITMO University have proven that a silicon-gold nanoparticle can act as an effective source of white light when agitated by a pulse laser in IR band. One such “nanobulb” was integrated into a standard probe microscope, which allowed the researchers to overcome the diffraction limit and examine subwavelength-size objects. What is more, it made it possible to study the optical response of nanoobjects on the entire visual band, and not just in particular wavelengths. Not only will the new technology make modern near-field microscopy cheaper and simpler, but it also can find use in medicine. The scientists are currently patenting their invention, while its description has recently been published in the prestigious Nano Letters journal.

  • Technopark Resident's Projects Get Government Support At Sochi Youth Expo

The 19th International Youth and Student Festival has come to a close in Sochi. At the event, young engineers and inventors have presented more than 125 innovative projects at the occupational guidance exhibition Youth Expo “New Technologies and Innovations”, organized by the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade. Among these cutting-edge projects, three were created with help from ITMO University: the NanoTutor scanning probe microscope, the MicProbe scanning probe module  and new nano-ink for jet-printing luminescent holograms and document protection. The Ministry of Industry and Trade has expressed its intent to support the best projects presented at the expo; among them are ITMO’s products.

  • ITMO Scientists Improve Lensless Computational Microscopy Technology

Scientists from ITMO University and the Tampere University of Technology have improved upon a method for computational processing of optical signals in lensless microscopes. The algorithms they developed have helped increase the resolution of images acquired from such microscopes. Results of their research have been published in The Optical Society’s (OSA) scientific journal Optica.
