  • MIT Professor Marin Soljacic: AI Will Play a Large Role in the Future of Research

In 2007, the New York Times named Marin Soljačić as the author of one of that year’s top 70 “curious, inspired, and perplexing” inventions. The celebrated scientist, winner of numerous awards, and MIT professor is known to the world as, first and foremost, a researcher of wireless energy transfer technology. His experiments and studies on the subject are often compared to those of Nicola Tesla. In recent years, Prof. Soljačić has been exploring the applications of photonic crystals in solar energy production and the usage of machine learning algorithms in photonics. He presented a report on his latest research during the METANANO conference, which has recently concluded in St. Petersburg. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, Marin Soljačić discusses the effects of the latest tech on research and explains why scientists must not limit themselves to a single field of study.

  • Technology and Policy Student Julia Milton: Science is a Very Good Instrument for Stabilizing the State of International Politics

Julia Milton is a student of MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics where she works in a lab that develops wearable devices for astronauts as well as exoskeletons, and space suits. Julia was a participant of this year’s Stanford US-Russia Forum: together with Daria Denisova, the deputy head of ITMO’s Science Communication and Outreach Office, the team developed a report and an art project dedicated to the US-Russian space cooperation. Inspired by the James Webb Space Telescope, the massive art piece will consist of numerous hexagonal shapes depicting the milestone events of the two countries’ shared history of space exploration. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, she spoke about their project, the popularization of space in Russia and the USA, and the importance of social initiative.

  • PhD Student from MIT on Internship at ITMO, Russian Culture and Science

Charles Roques-Carmes is a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who works under the guidance of Marin Soljačić, a renowned scientist famous for his research in the field of wireless nonradiative energy transfer and various issues of photonics and electromagnetics. The young researcher came to ITMO for a three-month internship in order to work with scientists from the Research Center of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials. Charles stresses that coming to Russia was a well-thought-out decision: here, not only can he work in a promising research field, but he can also practice his Russian which he has been learning since his school days. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, he spoke about the specifics of working at ITMO University and why the Russian language can often appear harder than studying nanophotonics.
