  • Smart Cities, Robot Bureaucrats: Japanese Digitalization Expert on Building the Right Kind of Society 5.0

    In recent years, Japan has been moving in the direction of creating a new strategy of socio-economic relations and cultural development of the country. Dubbed Society 5.0, the strategy puts an emphasis on the proliferation of high technology in all spheres of life. At the end of January, St. Petersburg welcomed a leading Japanese expert in the field of digitalization – Toshiyuki Zamma, Executive Advisor to Government CIO (Government of Japan Chief Information Officer). In his lecture, which took place at ITMO University, the expert spoke about the successes Japan managed to achieve in integrating high technology in different spheres of society, and also tried to warn about the problems and pitfalls awaiting the society and government on this uneasy path.

  • What Russian Startups Bring to Japan

    The St. Petersburg Expoforum is currently hosting the 12th St. Petersburg International Innovation Forum. During the first day of the event, a roundtable discussion was held on the topic of Russian-Japanese economic relations. The discussion was organized by ITMO University, ITMO Highpark, and the investment service SAMI. A writer for ITMO.NEWS learned what Russian and Japanese IT entrepreneurs discussed during the event and tried to find out what future awaits Russian-Japanese high tech collaboration.

  • Participants of Russian-Japanese Youth Exchange Discuss Accessibility in St. Petersburg

    Over the course of six days, St. Petersburg welcomed a group of students and volunteers from the Japanese Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (JSRPD). In that time, they’ve explored the city, learned what kind of assistance people with disabilities receive in Russia, and familiarized themselves with accessibility-related projects developed by ITMO students. A correspondent for ITMO.NEWS met with some of the program’s participants to find out why St. Petersburg is behind Japan in terms of accessibility, why persons with disabilities find it easier to socialize in Russia, and what makes ITMO reminiscent of Singaporean universities.

  • Creator of Near-Field Microscopes Satoshi Kawata Gives a Talk at ITMO University

    Photonics, optics, and metamaterials are among the key fields of focus for ITMO, and it is constantly advancing its collaborations with international experts who come to the university to share their expertise. One example is a recent visit by Satoshi Kawata, a Japanese scientist whose pioneering works changed these fields forever. Creator of near-field microscopes and honorary scientist of RIKEN, Japan’s largest and most comprehensive research organization for basic and applied science, Prof. Kawata visited ITMO University's Centre for Information Optical Technologies with a presentation on his research.

  • ITMO University and VR/AR Association Host Japan VR/AR Day in St. Petersburg

    With more than 16,000 members around the world, the VR/AR Association is the world’s largest community of developers and entrepreneurs in the field of VR and AR. Last week, ITMO University hosted this year’s third VR/AR Association meetup, dubbed the Japan AR/VR Day. Among the event’s speakers were representatives of major Japanese companies in the field of innovative technologies. They spoke about the varied applications of virtual, augmented and mixed reality technologies, as well as their potential when combined with technologies such as artificial intelligence. The meeting was organized in collaboration with ITMO University’s Educational Center of Graphic Technologies and Center of Usability and Mixed Reality.
