  • ITMO Alumnus Ilya Lazerson on Why Chefs Should Have Higher Education

    Today, Ilya Lazerson is one of the most prominent chefs in St. Petersburg and Russia. He worked with owners of world-class restaurants in Europe, published numerous cookbooks, hosted more than one TV show, and joined the Eda (Food) TV channel. These days, Ilya is also a famous YouTube blogger with over a million subscribers. He became interested in cooking when he was fifteen years old and in the 90s, he graduated from the Leningrad Technological Institute of Refrigeration Industry (currently, part of ITMO’s School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems). ITMO.NEWS talked to the star chef to learn more about his student years and media presence, as well as what he thinks about the current foodtech trends and the importance of university education for chefs.

  • “I Did It Because I Could”: ITMO Alumnus Donates 800 Respirators to St. Petersburg Hospital, Buys Laptops for School Students

    In early April, the coronavirus epidemic caused schools in St. Petersburg to adopt a distance learning format. It became clear then that some 17,000 school students had no access to devices that would let them continue studying from home. Maksim Gavrilov, an ITMO University graduate, responded to the call to help students from low-income families by purchasing 54 computers. Before that, he donated over 800 respirators to the St. Petersburg Hospital №2. His own explanation is simply that he could help. We got in touch with Maksim for a chat about solidarity in times of the pandemic, his times at ITMO, his business, and how to maintain a proper workday in self-isolation.

  • Interactive Games, Drones, and Thousands of Participants: ITMO.GO Celebration for First-Year Students in Review

    On August 31, to mark the start of a new academic year, ITMO University hosted ITMO.GO, a large-scale celebration that brought together students, lecturers, staff, graduates, partners and friends of ITMO. During the event, over 4,000 first-year students of Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programs were officially welcomed into ITMO.FAMILY. At the celebration, they had an opportunity to learn more about the first days of their studies, take a fun photo with an A+ gradebook for luck, and also play chess, do some rowing or have a go at table hockey. Apart from that, the festivity marked the start of ITMO University’s 120th anniversary year celebrations, opened by Rector Vladimir Vasilyev.

  • Head of RN-Burenie Oil Company’s IT Department: Every Bit of Fundamental Knowledge I Have, I Learned at University

    In the early 2000s, Alexander Shevtsov enrolled at ITMO University’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty. In his third year, he paired up with a fellow student to start his first business; after his graduation, he developed projects in telecommunications; today, he is the head of the IT department at RN-Burenie, one of Rosneft’s key subsidiaries.   • Want to Be Successful in Business? Learn to Communicate

    ITMO University’s Technopark and the Future Technologies business accelerator have launched TEAM, an intensive team development course that helps startup managers acquire various soft skills and learn how to establish communications within a team. The course is developed and headed by Egor Deliev, an ITMO graduate and former head of AIESEC’s St. Petersburg office.
