  • Going Green: ITMO Launches Master’s Program in Decarbonization for the Energy Industry

    Decarbonization is a growing trend in the energy industry – all over the world, oil and gas companies are adopting technologies meant to curb their greenhouse emissions. In Russia, industry giants Gazprom and Lukoil have both launched decarbonization programs. However, as a nascent initiative, it still requires niche specialists, namely, engineers capable of operating the related equipment and designing recycling facilities. Starting this year, ITMO will train such specialists within its Master’s program Decarbonization Technologies for Fuel and Energy Industry. Read on to discover all you need to know about it.

  • Professor Alessandra Bonoli on Ecodesign, Circular Economy and Life Cycle Thinking

    In late February, professor Alessandra Bonoli from the University of Bologna (Italy) gave a series of lectures at ITMO University. Prof. Bonoli is an expert in the field of the Integrated Product Policy of the European Union, which aims to facilitate the transition from traditional manufacturing to environmentally responsible production. As part of the Industrial Ecology and Cleaner Production international program, Prof. Bonoli delivered the course “Eco-Design and Life Cycle Thinking”.   • Evolutionary Biologist David Seaborg: Science Enriches Our Lives with Fantastic Ideas and Discoveries

    When talking about science, David Seaborg says that the music, art, and theater are important in exciting people and catching their interest about science and scientific issues, such climate change and the extinction crisis. A renowned evolutionary biologist and the son of Nobel Laureate Glenn T. Seaborg, David has founded and currently leads the World Rainforest Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the rainforest and preserving biodiversity worldwide. This year, David Seaborg will speak at the 4th International Conference on the Periodic Table that will take place at ITMO University. We talked to the scientist about the usefulness Periodic Table, the promising potential of alternative energy sources, and why establishing a dialog between politicians and society is so important.

  • ITMO Students Study Circular Economy in Latvia

    On September 30, a course on ‘Circular economy and sustainable natural resources management” was launched as part of the CREA-RE-RU international project. Led by the Faculty of Food Biotechnologies and Engineering’s teacher Anastasia Pavlova, four ITMO students majoring in ‘Ecological engineering’ and ‘Industrial ecology and cleaner production’ visited the University of Latvia to work on real-life tasks in the field of resource conservation.
