  • ITMO Researchers Develop Smart Energy System To Help Ease Electrical Grid Load

The development of industry, urbanization – all of that constantly increases the load on electric grids. People need more and more electricity, as well as grids that can cope with such load: a malfunction in a single element can now lead to a district-wide or even city-wide blackout. For this reason, researchers are becoming all the more interested in the idea of a “smart” power supply management. Specialists from ITMO University develop a prototype of a smart system for houses that can adjust to daily fluctuations in power consumption and ease the load on infrastructure.

  • ITMO Engineers’ New AC System Brings a Breath of Fresh Air to Historical Buildings

A group of ITMO University engineers are testing a new air conditioning system as part of an R&D project. The system would provide a more cost-efficient way of regulating the air temperature and humidity within buildings compared to existing counterparts. Its design removes the need for a complete replacement of the ventilation system, and, because it requires no outside equipment to be installed, can also be used for buildings of historical importance. A writer for ITMO.NEWS was present during a testing stage and learned how the new system can reduce energy spending by up to 80%.

  • A Look at Russia’s First Master’s Program on LED Technologies

LED technologies are quickly taking over from incandescent lamps and other non-power-efficient light sources. Intelligent lighting is an integral part of smart cities, and concepts of lighting design, light quality, light pollution and others are becoming more and more recognizable. ITMO University’s Master’s program “LED Technologies” teaches students to work on the issues of a new, rapidly developing industry. Starting in their first year, students get to work on actual cases for various companies at the university’s laboratories, as well as to learn about the industry during practical training. Vladislav Bougrov, head of ITMO’s School of Photonics, explains how Russia’s first-ever specialized LED technology program works and what opportunities await its graduates.
