• EMI in Practice: ITMO Staff Participate in an English as a Medium of Instruction Internship at Boston University

  A group of 15 ITMO University lecturers, including specialists from the Foreign Language Training Center, have participated in a three-week course at Boston University (the US). The program included theory and practice of English as a Medium of Instruction, as well as lectures and workshops delivered by experts of the American university. • How to Teach in English: EMI Teacher Training Course for Lecturers of Russian Universities

  ITMO University just completed the results of a 13-week English as a Medium of Instruction Teacher Training professional development course. 15 specialists from different Russian universities took part in the course. For the first 12 weeks, the lecturers studied online: they watched lectures and completed relevant tasks. The last week of the course was devoted to practice and was held at ITMO University.

• English Teachers Unite at NATE Convention

  The NATE 2019 Jubilee Convention was held at ITMO University on April 17-19 and brought together nearly 400 English language teachers from around Russia and 20 international guests. The participants met new colleagues and shared their knowledge and inspiration amid the event's warm and welcoming atmosphere.

• EMI Professional Development Course Launched at ITMO

  For a few years now, the Foreign Language Training Center at ITMO has been offering free English language courses for all staff. Last September, a special course was launched for lecturers of all subjects who are currently teaching or plan to teach in English, to learn more about how to use English as a medium of instruction (EMI).

• New Head of US English Language Office on How to Improve English-Language Education in Russia and the World

  Universities all over the world are putting efforts into creating an English-language culture among their students, professors and researchers, as such knowledge lets universities reach out and enter the international education market, explained Kelli Odhuu, new head of the regional English Language Office at the US Embassy, during her visit to ITMO University’s International Office. She learned about the university’s efforts to popularize the English language and spoke about the general issues that universities worldwide encounter in this endeavor.

• What is EMI? Tips and Tools

  These days many educational programs in universities are offered in English and ITMO University is no exception to this trend. The university’s Foreign Language Training Center has organized a series of workshops on English Medium Instruction (EMI). On June 21, the Center’s tutors Maryam Reyhani and Aleksandra Shparberg spoke about EMI, what makes it different from teaching students in their first language (L1) and how one should teach students whose mother tongue is not English.
