  • ITMO Scientists Get St. Petersburg Government Award and Presidential Grants

    The team of ITMO University’s International Research Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials has recently received the St. Petersburg government award for scientific support of young specialists’ training in the field of physics of metamaterials. What is more, this year three of the university’s scientists received presidential grants on research in the fields deemed strategically important for the country’s development.

  • ITMO Student Wins IEEE Undergraduate Scholarship

    This year six young scientists from the USA, Canada and Russia were awarded an IEEE MTT-S Undergraduate Scholarship. Maxim Masyukov, a fourth-year student at the Faculty of Photonics and Optical Information, was among the winners. MTT-S is the biggest international society of experts in microwave, millimeter-wave, and terahertz technologies. The society exists as part of the IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and provides scholarships to students and postgraduates. Maxim’s research concerned the development of a chiral metasurface with tunable polarizing properties in THz frequency range. ITMO.NEWS asked him some questions about how to win such a scholarship.

  • ITMO Scientists Develop Topological Defect Detection Method

    An international scientific team has developed a new method of probing topological structures and their topological phase transitions. The method is based on examining the reflection spectrum of EM-waves reflecting off an object from different impact angles. The accuracy of the method’s results has been verified experimentally in both IR and microwave spectra. Results were published in Nature Communications.

  • ITMO's Metamaterial MRI-Boosting Invention Praised by St. Petersburg Government

    A project by scientists from ITMO’s Department of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials that aims to improve the speed and quality of MRI scanning has won the first place in a competition for innovative projects in science and higher education. The competition was organized by the administration of St. Petersburg. Winners were announced at the St. Petersburg International Innovation Forum (SPIIF). The scientists’ invention shortens the time needed to perform an MRI scan by half and makes it cheaper.

  • New Metamaterial-Enhanced MRI Technology Successfully Tested on Human Subjects

    Scientists from the Netherlands and Russia designed and tested a new metasurface-based technology for enhancing the local sensitivity of MRI scanners on human test subjects for the first time. The metasurface consists of thin resonant strips arranged periodically. Placed under a patient's head, it provides much higher image quality from the local brain region. The results, published in Scientific Reports, show that the use of metasurfaces can potentially reduce image acquisition time, make the procedure more comfortable for patients and acquire higher resolution images to allow diseases to be diagnosed at an earlier stage.

  • Russian Scientists Develop New Metasurfaces for Deep UV-Imaging

    Russian researchers developed a new material, which converts infrared light to ultrashort pulses of ultraviolet. For this purpose, the scientists exposed silicon film to laser so that its relief adjusted under light wavelength and made properties of the material resonant. In the end, the researchers got a cheap and easy-to-make metasurface, which is as effective as existing ones. The new technology can help create compact UV generators for biophotonics and medicine, and also devices for ultradense data processing in optical communication. The study was published in Nanoscale.
