On January 29, the St. Petersburg’s Atomic Energy Information Center hosted 2019’s first discussion about the latest trends in science and technology. The event brought together leading science communicators from different fields, including Ivan Drokin, a specialist in machine learning, Andrey Seriakov, a physicist and Science Slam winner, Alexander Khokhlov, a space instrumentation engineer, and Ekaterina Khomiakova biochemist. An international research team has described new molecular mechanisms regulating the activity of macrophages, which are crucial elements of the immune response, in a breakthrough project. Macrophage activation is regulated by the level of itaconate, which has various effects on the production of substances causing inflammation. Regulatory pathways of itaconate and its derivatives are associated with the pathogenesis of some autoimmune diseases. Experiments on mice and isolated human cells have shown that these substances can significantly alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis. The results of this study are published in Nature.
An international research team that includes scientists from ITMO University has come closer to understanding the structure of the human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) which affects thousands every year. The reserachers have partially mapped out the three-dimensional structure of the NS1 protein contained in HRSV and identified the structural parts responsible for the suppression of the human immune system. The results of the study have been published in the Nature Microbiology journal.
