  • ITMO.STARS 2019 Winners: Who They Are and Why They Chose ITMO

    This year, the ITMO.STARS competition for prospective students with unique accomplishments was held by ITMO for the second time in a row. It lets the winners join ITMO even if their Unified State Exam score wouldn’t normally allow them to. The only formal criterion is to pass the minimal Unified State Exam points threshold. This year saw twice as many applications as the previous one. Among the winners are 15 participants from St. Petersburg, Moscow, Chelyabinsk, Pskov, Abakan, and other cities. They told ITMO.NEWS how to land a job at VK in your school years, how to open your own video studio, and why you shouldn't underestimate yourself.

  • ITMO Accelerator: New Formats and How to Participate

    For three years now, ITMO University’s entrepreneurship and innovation infrastructure includes a business accelerator. This is a model of early-stage support for businesses created by ITMO students which implies intensive development of a project in the shortest period of time possible. Starting from the new academic year, the accelerator has changed its structure and expanded on the formats of its interaction with the students. It can now offer its services to those who don’t yet have a clear-cut idea for their project. The accelerator staff note that the new programs give all participants the opportunity to fast-track their way to new practical knowledge and skills. Applications are already open. ITMO.NEWS have spoken to Alexey Solomatin, the new head of the accelerator, ITMO University alum and top manager at the international company ThingLink, to find out more about the revamped business program.

  • Startup Boom: SumIT Summer School at ITMO University

    For the third time in a row, ITMO University’s Entrepreneurship Center organizes the SumIT international summer startup school. This year, SumIT is held as part of the StartUp Connect cross-border cooperation program. That’s why the program was, first and foremost, aimed at students from ITMO University and Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK University), Finland. Also participating are students from Finland, China and Bangladesh, as well as experts from the Entrepreneurship Center and businesspeople.

  • ITMO Delegates Discuss the Development of Public Spaces During a Visit to Finland

    ITMO University staff have taken part in the “The Baltics. Sails of the World” visit to Helsinki under the aegis of Startup Connect, a project forming part of the 2014-2020 South-East Finland – Russia cross-border cooperation program jointly funded by the European Union, Finland and Russia. Over the course of three days, the Russian delegation toured Finland’s largest creative spaces and startup hubs and discussed collaborations with the representatives of the region’s business community and administrations.

  • Historian Sergey Kuznetsov on the Stroganovs, Their Connection to ITMO, and History of Entrepreneurship in Russia

    Recently, an exhibition called “A Forgotten Russian Patron. The Collection of Count Pavel Sergeevich Stroganov” has opened at the State Hermitage Museum. It features paintings, sculptures, photographs and other exhibits collected by the scion of the dynasty. One of the most influential aristocratic families in Russia, the Stroganovs were veritable pioneers and innovators in the field of technologies and education. One of ITMO University’s campuses (that on Tchaikovsky St.) is based on the dynasty’s former ancestral home. ITMO.NEWS sat down with Sergey Kuznetsov, a historian and staff member at the Russian Museum and leading researcher of the Stroganov family, to talk about the exhibition and the university’s participation in the preservation of the dynasty’s vast collections.

  • “Innovative Entrepreneurship” Master’s Program: Starting Your Business at ITMO University

    Now is the right time to learn how to create your own business, believes Anton Gopka, investor, co-founder of ATEM Capital and dean of ITMO’s Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations. But in order to launch a really successful company, one needs systemic knowledge. Such competencies are taught at ITMO’s “Innovative Entrepreneurship” Master’s program. Its students can launch their independent projects under the guidance of mentors — successful entrepreneurs and representatives of the industry, as well as use their startups for their thesis defense. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, Anton Gopka expanded on the opportunities offered by the program as well as the competencies that one has to get today in order to be sought-after tomorrow.
