  • R&D Projects Competition Winners On Their Creations and University Support

    In late March, the results of ITMO’s practice-oriented R&D projects competition were announced. A total of 25 participants presented their ideas with only 10 getting grants from the University. These grants don’t only include financial support, but also help with project paperwork, and team work management. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with the heads of the winning teams to ask them why their projects are special and how they are planning to use the grants.

  • Four ITMO University Students Receive SPIE Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship

    Four young researchers from ITMO University were chosen to receive the prestigious scholarship of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). The results of the scholarship competition have been recently announced on the SPIE website. SPIE annually supports students and PhD researchers working in promising fields. The scholarship is meant to cover attendance of SPIE conferences, participation in educational courses, and purchasing learning materials.   • School Students from All Over Russia and Belarus Take Part in the Congress of Young Scientists

    The Congress of Young Scientists took place on April 15-18 at ITMO University. This year, school and university students presented their research online. Ten sections for school students were attended by 118 participants from 34 cities all over Russia and Belarus. Their young age didn’t stop the participants from conducting real scientific research with the help of their advisors. We asked some of the students what their projects are about, how they liked the online format, and what they want to work on in future.

  • ITMO University’s Congress of Young Scientists Held Online for the First Time

    The novel coronavirus pandemic has forced theaters, museums and concert halls to move into the digital space – and scientific events are not an exception. This year, the Congress of Young Scientists was set, for the 17th time, to bring together talented researchers at ITMO University. But 2020 turned out to be historic, and this Congress – unique. As part of the reviewed arrangement, young scientists will be presenting their research and communicating with experts on Zoom.

  • Reach Out and Touch Science: Sirius Conference Participants at ITMO University

    From February 10 to 15, five students from Moscow, Kazan and Saint Petersburg took part in an internship at the Faculty of Physics and Engineering at ITMO University. Supervised by researchers and postgraduate students, they worked for a week on a real experiment with high-tech equipment.   • Government of St. Petersburg Scholarship: ITMO Students’ Experiences

    The St. Petersburg Committee for Science and Higher Education has summed up the results of the contest for the granting of subsidies to the students of universities and specialized educational organizations. Some 310 scholarships amounting to 2,000 rubles per month are awarded annually, covering the whole duration of the academic year.   • THz Success: ITMO Master’s Student Presents His Research in Paris

    ITMO University student Egor Litvinov believes that 2019 may well be his lucky year: he’s won a presidential scholarship to pursue studies abroad, became a laureate of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society scholarship and attended international conferences in Paris and Yokohama, where he also got the opportunity to present his research.   • IEEE Scholarship Winner on Opportunities Offered by Terahertz Radiation

    ITMO graduate Anton Zaytsev who is currently doing a PhD program at the University’s Faculty of Photonics and Optical Information has become one of the six people to receive a scholarship from the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society for implementing the project “Development of optically tunable graphene-based THz devices”. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Anton to learn how terahertz radiation can replace the X-ray, why he and his colleagues are looking for a replacement for single-layer graphene, and what is to be considered when applying for an international grant.

This academic year, they can go abroad to study and work alongside their international colleagues solving scientific tasks in their fields of focus.   • ITMO University Scientists Present Record Amount of Works at the 2019 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference in Prague

    GECCO (Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference), which this year took place in Prague, Czech Republic, is one of the biggest and most prestigious scientific events in the field of evolutionary computation. ITMO University scientists have been active participants of the conference since 2011, regularly presenting the results of their work to the international community. But this year, ITMO’s representation reached a record high with 11 reports, tackling both fundamental and applied aspects of evolutionary computation, being presented by the staff and students of the Information Technologies and Programming Faculty. The research by the Bachelor’s graduate Vitaly Karavaev was recognized as the best in the student section.
