• ITMO Solution Prevents Counterfeiting of Glass Products

  Researchers from ITMO University have suggested a method of creating colored patterns with an affordable, domestically-produced laser. Compared to others, the new method makes it possible to create smaller separate patterns within a single bigger one, which are harder to forge. The technology, described in an article published in Optics and Laser Technology, will help prevent production of counterfeit glass products, such as medical vials and test tubes.

• ITMO’s Advanced Engineering School Passes Project Defence

  On February 15, the Russian capital welcomed teams from universities all over the country. They presented the results achieved by their advanced engineering schools in 2023 and outlined their next steps before a committee from the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Based on the results of these presentations, the Ministry will name the country’s best teams and allocate funding for advanced engineering schools of 30 universities for 2024.

• Scientists in St. Petersburg Find a Way to Study Game Addiction

  Researchers from ITMO University, St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI”, and Almazov National Medical Research Centre discovered that the brain pathways responsible for self-control, pleasure, and affection change in people who regularly play video games; whereas their cognitive functions remain unchanged, which is visible on functional MRI scans. The study's findings might be used for early diagnosis of game addiction.

• AI to Bring Parity in Science: Alexander Boukhanovsky on Developing Fundamental AI Models

  Alexander Boukhanovsky, the head of ITMO’s School of Translational Information Technologies, recently took part in a press conference held by the Russian Science Foundation at the TASS news agency. The scientist highlighted Russia’s role as one of the leaders in using the combination of AI and classical mathematical methods to deliver relevant applied solutions. However, several more challenges have to be overcome in order to place Russia on an even footing with other world AI leaders.

• ITMO Scientists Devise High-Speed Area Scanners for Security and Missing Person Searches

  Researchers from ITMO University have developed a scanning system that  produces high-resolution thermal imaging pictures of its surroundings by detecting objects of varying temperatures at two-second intervals. Compared to analogs, the proposed technology is more reliable and affordable, and can scan areas more quickly. Among its possible applications are infrastructure security, tracking all modes of transportation (water, land, and air), and locating missing persons.
