This Weekend in St. Petersburg: March 31 - April 1
Though it's still cold in St. Petersburg, the sun rises higher, prompting us to get outside more. This weekend Russians will celebrate April Fools’ Day - so stay alert! Here’s our weekly review of the events you may find interesting!
This Sunday is April's Fools Day and the streets of the historic center of St. Petersburg will host clowns, jugglers and acrobats that will entertain the crowd with their magic for the 13th “Funny Festival”.
The festival is organised by the “Mimigrants” Clown-Mime Theater. The program includes a concert on the square in front of the Music Hall theater, literature contests, performances, exhibitions and other activities for children and adults. The festival starts at 12pm on April 1 at the Peter and Paul Fortress and will last for two weeks ‘til April 15. Don’t miss out on the fun!
If you prefer quieter activities, an evening of live jazz music at the Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines is exactly what you need. Here you can have a rest after a long week and enjoy an incredible atmosphere (March 31, 8:30 pm).
If you're a theater lover, Aurora Cinema organises live broadcasts from New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the London National Theatre, the Bolshoi Theatre and many other renowned venues. This is a unique opportunity to see all-time classics on the big screen. Among the performances are “Hamlet” with Benedict Cumberbatch, Adolphe Adam’s “Giselle”, Giuseppe Verdi's “Il Trovatore” and other beautiful plays and ballets.
And be sure to check out the Skatert-Samobranka food fair! The fair has a variety of stalls with different types of food. You can purchase something to eat right there or take home some nice preserves, chutneys, tea, and other packaged goods that you can enjoy at home. The Russian words Skatert-Samobranka refer to a Russian fairytale artifact, a magic tablecloth that fills up with food after you spread it on the ground and say the magic words. It’s a cute theme for the event, but it’s ok if you don’t know the magic words, just be prepared with enough cash in case you get really enticed by the options! Come to Gagarin Exhibition Centre (March 29 - April 1) and enjoy!
