“Physics: the Game of Light” - ITMO University and Newtonew Launch a New Online Game for School Students
ITMO and the Newtonew educational portal launch a new online game "Physics: the Game of Light", which is aimed at attracting talented and motivated applicants to study at the university. The participants will get the opportunity to check their grasp of physics, as well as earn up to 10 points that would be added to their Unified State Examination score.
What is the game's target audience?
Anyone can play the game, though it was developed for highschoolers. The main requirements to a player are being interested in science and wanting to test his skills by solving engaging tasks.
How does it work?
All the tasks are to be solved online after registering on the game’s website. One can register whenever they want, from May 28. The first set of tasks will be launched on April 10; the game will be divided into five stages with a time limit - a week for each, and will end on May 12.
Each task will correspond to one of three difficulty levels.
- The first one is the simplest; almost any teenager will have no problems with such tasks.
- The second is somewhat harder and implies knowing the fundamental laws of physics.
- Tasks of the third level are closest to the classical ones given during different contests.
A participant can work on the tasks anytime during the weekly period given for each stage, in any order he chooses - all that's important is to send in the results before a new stage begins. The answers to each stage will be published a week after it ends.
After each stage, the rankings will be automatically published on the game's website, and after the fifth week, the names of winners will be announced.
According to the Newtonew project's founder, Evgeniy Smirnov, the game's authors decided to take on an original approach and show that physics is both really interesting and what anyone can study.
What can students gain from playing?
The game offers an opportunity to get 10 additional points to the Unified State Exam score in Physics, as well as win special prizes from ITMO University.
To get the additional points, the participant has to win the game and get into the top of the rankings, as well as provide evidence that it was he who solved all these tasks - videos on him doing the tasks posted on Youtube will be proof.
As for special prizes from ITMO University, getting them is a lot simpler: all one has to do is just complete all of the game's stages and get into the top of the rankings.Among the special prizes will be tickets to the Museum of Optics, tours to the university's laboratories, as well as ITMO's trademark T-shirts and learning aids.
The additional points to the Unified State Exam may be used when enrolling at ITMO University, which has recently opened a new Faculty focused on training elite specialists in Physics. This Faculty is now part of the School of Photonics, and is led by Pavel Belov, Prize Winner of the President of the Russian Federation in the field of science and innovation for young scientists award and Head of the International Research Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials;its new program - Nanophotonics and Quantum Optics - will gather the most promising physics students of the country.
