Maria Borovkova, the Master student of the Chair of Photonics and Optoinformatics, and Sviatoslav Gusev, the engineer of the Terahertz Biomedicine lab of the International Institute “Photonics and Optical Information Technology,” ran a set of experiments and discovered that blood sugar level influences optical properties of blood. It means that terahertz technologies can be used for a noninvasive blood glucose meter. Using this device diabetics will avoid painful blood sampling. Moreover it permits to cut down expenses on blood tests.

“Thanks to the terahertz technologies blood sugar level estimating will be painless and safe because sometimes finger stick results in blood poisoning. Furthermore this method can be used for blood testing of newborn children and seniors because their skin heals more slowly,” Sviatoslav Gusev said.

Young scientists presented their research project at the European Conference on Biomedical Optics 2015 in Munich and “IONS 2015 Karlsruhe” conference.

“IONS 2015” was organized by “OSKar” student chapter. Patrik Rath, the president of “OSKar” visited ITMO University on April. Back then he invited us to this conference, ” Maria Borovkova noted.

The researchers are going to improve the project to get more precise measurements. They want to make the devise more compact and improve it in order to minimize measurement errors. It is also necessary to lead the clinical trial for certifying the terahertz blood glucose meter.
