In May, 2014 the ITMO University and the New Mexico Highlands University (Las Vegas, USA) have signed an agreement about opening of the joint educational program "Laser engineering and laser technologies". Graduates of this program will receive a diploma from the American University. For the ITMO University it is one of the first of such programs.

The aim of the master's program, designed for two years, is to enhance the educational and research activities in the scope of creation and use of organic materials in laser technique. Program participants will undergo training at the partner universities for one semester.

Igor Denisyuk, the head of the Department of Engineering Photonics, the head of the international laboratory "Nonlinear optical molecular crystals and microlasers" leadsprogramat the ITMO University. Rector for academic affairs Linda Lagrange is program coordinator from the New Mexico Highlands University. Upon completion of negotiations about cooperation partners from the United States stressed that cooperation with the ITMO University is great advantagefor American students: work with highly qualified Russian specialists in the scope of photonics will help students in employment and in obtaining the degree of PhD in prestigious universities.

Broad prospects of research activities are openingto masters of the ITMO University. Students will have the opportunity to conduct research in ultra-modern x-ray diffraction research laboratories of the New Mexico Highlands University, x-ray diffractometer which allows scientists to analyze the internal structure of atoms and molecules within the crystal. There is a unique laser device that helps to grow the crystals from liquids similar to ethanol and to transfer them into the solid state.
