Description

On August 31 at 3pm, ITMO University is hosting a National Autonomous University of Mexico Professor Carlos Gershenson's lecture 'Bridging humanities and STEM: introduction to computational social science'.

Until very recently, social phenomena research was seen as belonging to the realm of humanities, mainly because it was difficult to match hypotheses with relevant data and competing theories' main assets lay in the rhetoric justifiying their dogmas. But the easing access to reliable data and computational tools allows for a more objective and accurate comparison of social science theories. Previous attempts to connect humanities with hard sciences weren't successful due to unbridgeable complexity inherent to social systems.

In his ITMO University lecture Carlos Gershenson will talk about how computers made scientific research of complex social systems a reality, illustrating his theses with examples of real-life projects in the field of computational social science. Considering these projects' success, we can anticipate that social sciences will continue to merge with IT to bring about more cutting-edge and revelational social systems research.
